What’s that mean? We’ve got some great angling action going on up here this holiday weekend. Temperatures have dropped dramatically, which will make the last day of skiing and snowboarding on the mountain this Monday a very worthwhile experience. Ever ride a chairlift on the last official day of the ski/ snowboard season? It’s a party. What else is going on up here? The Upper Owens River opens up on Saturday, May 24, from Browns Town Campground all the way to the lake. “The Upper O” is all fair game. The water might be a bit on the murky side from the run-off, but plenty of healthy trout are going to come ashore from “The Upper O” this weekend. All about big bugs for the fly angler and inflated nightcrawlers for the bait dudes and spin ladies. Snow run-off? Angling is still good on the waters; just weigh the daylights out of your goods to get them down. Dredge the bottoms of the creeks and rivers, where the big fish live. Browns and bows alike. Speaking of browns and bows… Crowley Lake is improving and turning on a bit more each day. Cutties? We’ve spotted some cruising Gull Lake in the June Lake Loop. Tioga Pass is open. Highway 120 is your ticket to ride up into Yosemite and towards the world-class fisheries up yonder. Other excitement going on? Ever seen “Mutton Bustin’?” It’s Mule Days in Bishop, California. Mule Days is a very worthwhile family event. Lots and lots of good family fun. We’ve got it all this weekend… Mammoth Mountain, monster trout, and Mule Days. Where else to be for Memorial Day Weekend than Mammoth Lakes, California? What is “The Trail of the Trout” coming to Mammoth this summer? We’ve got 99.99% of our lakes free of ice on 99.99% of the lakes in the region. Temps have dropped over the week, and there is some very slight snowfall in the forecast for the weekend, but the lakes are ready to rock and roll. Rock Creek Lake is open. Virginia Lakes are ready for you. Crowley Lake is improving, big time, as it picks up steadily. The lakes in Mammoth (Mamie, Mary, and George) all got loaded with Alpers Trout in the 3 – 5 pound range. No joke. Twin has been stocked regularly. Access up to all of these lakes is wide open. Get up there with the worms, lures, streamers, 6-pack of beer, sandwiches, better 2nd half, kids… you name it. George, Mary, Mamie, and Twin await you. Convict? Still fishing very well. Gull Lake? Cutties. Silver Lake? Very good. The moving waters… There is plenty of run-off right now, but anglers are nailing trout. Just weight down your lines to slow down the drift of your flies and bait, and get the goods down where the big fish are located. A lot of them are getting comfortable right now. Their guards are down. That means it’s time for you to get out there and get at ‘em. How about a place to crash in comfort and style for the time in the mountains? Stay in Mammoth at: www.stayinmammoth.com If we cannot answer your questions in this report, contact Matuka Joe online at matukajoe@yahoo.com Bridgeport & Virginia Lakes Area Fisheries (Northern Mono County) Anglers… the best news in Northern Mono County right now is the bait action on Bridgeport Reservoir. Likewise, Virginia Lakes Resort is open and the angling up at Virginia is good right now. They make a mean slice of pie at Virginia Lakes Resort. Flows in The East Walker have picked up, but angling is not shut out and there are healthy rainbows coming out of it. Bridgeport Reservoir - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Spin and Bait Anglers Pick of the Week!" Bridgeport Reservoir is fishing best right now for the bait and spin anglers. Fly anglers have found the angling action on Bridgeport Reservoir to slow up a bit. Fly anglers are better off hitting the lakes above or around Mammoth Lakes right now. Dragging some streamers might get hits though. Midging really isn’t happening here right now. Get those big midges out for Crowley. Bait and spin anglers are killing it at Bridgeport now. Check our suggestions immediately below. Fly Anglers: As mentioned, a little on the slow side right now. Your best bet is to go with a sink line at rate 3 or 4, and get those big streamers waaaaaay down there. You are going to do best to just drag your bugs off the bottom. Kick around or drift at 2 – 3 mph and be patient. There are plenty of healthy trout in this body of water, so your efforts could be rewarded handsomely. Spin Anglers: Spin and bait anglers are doing quite well on Bridgeport Reservoir, pulling nice browns in the 3 – 4 pound range onto the boat. Inflated Nightcrawlers dropped into the waters by the dam seems to be the most productive method right now. However, trollers working the waters in the morning hours are equally as successful. Dragging Panther Martins down 4 or 5 colors is working wonders. Rapalas are also good bets right now. Upper and Lower Twin Lakes (Bridgeport) - Fishing is okay on Upper and Lower Twin Lakes. DFG has been dropping stockers into its waters. No reports yet of record breaking trout, but it will happen soon enough. Trust us. Not much has changed in what is working and what is not. Just continue with the goods we recommended last week, as anglers are beaching trout with our advice. Fly Anglers: Streamers are again the way to go on these lakes. Kick around or drift at 2 – 3 mph with the sinking line and some big streamers on the other end. Sculpins, Buggers, Bunnies. Drop a Prince Nymph 18-inches off the back and let it ride. Spin Anglers: Some quality bows are coming out of these lakes. They’re biting at plenty of bait. We’re hearing of good reports of Gulp Eggs, Gulp Dough, Inflated Nightcrawlers, and Powerworms. Bait up your eggs and dough with fluorocarbon and treble hooks in sizes 16 and 18. Robinson Creek - Fish Report Still plenty of healthy Alpers Trout in Robinson Creek. Run-offs have picked up a bit in Robinson, just put on a bigger split shot to get the goods down and give the trout time to see them. Fly anglers: Big ol’ flies like Hare’s Ears, Soft Tackle, Red P.A. Rubber Worms, Flossy Nymphs. Anything with flash will also increase your odds of beached trout. Spin anglers: Gulp Eggs and Salmon Eggs. Anglers are doing very well right now on Robinson Creek. Virginia Lakes - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Virginia Lakes Resort has opened up, so get on up there for some great angling action. John and Carolyn run a world-class outfit, definitely worth hanging out for a week or two. The fishing was good with the ice, so it’s only going to get better from here on out. There is still some snow around the banks of the lakes, but the lakes are ice-free. DFG planted some of the goods in the lake, so check it out. The Resort has some of the best beer in the area on tap: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Speaking of brews, while it is still a way’s off, plug in your calendar the Mammoth Festival of Beers and Blues for the 1st and 2nd of August, 2008. Per Virginia, get on up there today!!! Fly anglers: It’s going to be a cold one this weekend, but anglers pulling on the neoprene waders and kicking around in the float tube will be rewarded. Get out your green and black Woolly Buggers and drag them around the bottom of the lakes. Pack the flask in the pocket to keep you warm underneath. Spin anglers: Lip Ripperz, Thomas Bouyants, Kastmasters, Sinking Rapalas… all great choices for the tuber or troller. Inflated Nightcrawlers are also golden right now. Lundy Lake - Fish Report Lundy is still fishing very well. We’ve got plenty of exploding aspen on the drive on up there. Definitely worth the trip up to the lake. Spin anglers are constantly reporting hits on Black Rooster Tails. Fly anglers: Keep kicking around with the streamers. Getting those streamers down and out is working well. Woolly Buggers, P.A. Perch Patterns, Krystal Buggers… that’s what we’re talking about!!! Spin anglers: Black Rooster Tails seem to be the lure of choice to be trolling with right now. Thomas Bouyants in bright colors are also working well. Troll with the lead color, 4 or 5 colors out. Mono Lake - Fish Report Some impressive Bonita were taken last weekend with live bait… sardines and mackerel. Plenty of ocean fish on the move right now. Fly anglers: Get out there and spot fish for the bigger game fish on the move. When you’ve dialed in on them, get out your biggest ocean streamers and drop them in the pod. Hold on tight and… WHAM!!! You’re hooked. Spin anglers: Mackerel and sardines. Hook them through the nose and let them swim around until them become your lunch’s lunch. Angling on Mono Lake??? Are we serious??? Call us at the shop and we’ll let you know what we really know… 760-924-2181 East Walker River- Fish Report Water flows on the East Walker River have picked up again, but the flows are starting to run constantly, so the angling is turning on again after a quick recess. Any time that the water flows change on The East Walker, one needs to wait patiently a couple of days to allow the trout time to adjust. Pasadena Casting Club was up there last week having some fun. Don’t yet belong to a casting club? We suggest joining one as they are a lot of fun... casting and socializing all in one. Most clubs have monthly meetings with a guest speaker to talk about any given body or water. Very educational, very rewarding. Call us at the shop and we’ll point you out to one near your residence. Fly Anglers: Same small bug patterns, just weight them down a lot more than you would previously, since water flows are flowing 3 times as hard and fast as they were for a good month. Dredge the corners and double up on the dead drifting of streamers. Per nymphs, continue on with Small Baetis and Midge Patterns, anything in the size 18 – 22 range. Baetis colors of choice right now are brown, grey, and a two-tone olive with dark brown. Another good choice is to double up with a two-fly set up. Go with 4X or 5X tippet and tie about 12 – 18 inches above the tiny baetis or midge pattern, a more traditional nymph: BH Prince Nymph, BH Black Pheasant Tail, Soft Tackle Hare’s Ear. Streamers… Double Bunnies, Sculpins, Buggers. Dead drift two BH Matukas. One for good luck, and one to catch fish. Spin Anglers: Some big bows are coming ashore thanks to the good work of the Rapala company. Get them weighted down, pinch down the barbs, and work the currents to dial into some healthy-sized trout. Lots and lots of fun. Tioga & June Lake Loop Area Fisheries (Middle Mono County) We’ve got good news anglers… The Tioga Pass (Highway 120) is open on the Eastern Side of Yosemite National Park. Screw the famous Route 66… You are free to come and go into the park!!! We haven’t fished or heard anything about Saddleback yet. Give us a call to hear the latest: 760-924-2181. If you do go up into the park, hit the Tuolumne River in Tuolumne Meadows for some great wild brown angling. The fish are small, but a lot of fun to catch. The Tuolumne is a very wide river, and a lot of fun to fish. It seems much like a river that you might fine in New England. There is also some great fly and bubble lake angling in the Tuolumne high country… lakes without names nor angling pressure. Hiking in the park is easy enough as well. Another reason to head to Yosemite? The Strawberry Music Festival. It comes twice a year, if you missed tickets to this music festival this time around. Also… do not miss lunch at The Mobil Mart in Lee Vining. Trust us. Per The June Lake Loop… Cutties spotted in Gull Lake. Saddleback Lake - Fish Report Call us, please: 760-924-2181. Tioga Creek - Fish Report Water flows have picked up, so just weight down your goods and work the deeper pockets. Fly Anglers: Get out the big bugs… Hare’s Ears, Prince Nymphs, Flossies, Brassies, Pheasant Tails… all sizes 14 or 16, and work the deeper pools. Weight down your goods to handicap the flow and allow the trout time to dial onto your goods. Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers weighed down with plenty of shot. Salmon eggs will also do well. Lee Vining Creek - Fish Report Flows in Lee Vining Creek are fast, but the bait anglers are still doing well with the Nightcrawlers. Fly Anglers: Fish this creek the same way you would for Tioga Creek… go big, and weigh down your flies. Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers weighed down with plenty of shot. The trout are sucking down worms in this creek. Worms are a great choice in a lot of the creeks and rivers suffering Snow-melt-congesta-it is, as the heavier flows wash real worms into the water and the trout keen in on them. Just weight down the line to give the fish time to see and bite the goods. Fresh worms? Scrum-dittily-umpious!!! We do however recommend reserving them only for the creeks and not to add to your breakfast cereal. Grant Lake - Fish Report Water levels are certainly low, but this fine fishery is stacked with trout. Not fishing as well as Gull or Silver, but worth exploring. Fly Anglers: Full sink line with streamers. G’s-catchem-all’s, Woolly Buggers in Olive, Black, or White. If you really want to get medieval (and effective) tie a size-14 Prince Nymph 189-inches (really only 18-inches) off the back of your streamer. We are suggesting this method of fly angling for all of the lake in the Loop. Spin Anglers: Rapalas, Mirashads, Pin Minnows. Dough Baits like Nitro and Powerbait. These are all good options for Grant. Silver Lake - "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Silver is still fishing very, very well. Silver and Gull are this week sharing the title of “Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!” Plenty of trout are being dialed up on this lake. Make note in your calendars that Sunday, June 22, the good folks of the Federation of Fly Fishers Southwest Council are working with the Silver Lake Resort for the Second-annual Rush Creek Clean-up. Everyone is invited to partake in this event. Call the shop for more details: 760-924-2181 Breakfast at the Silver Lake Resort feeds anglers as easily as the bait and flies feed the fish. Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers. Gulp. Either of these options on a 2 – 3lb. test should dial in trout. Cast from the boat launch area. Lures… Go with some Lip Ripperz. Lip Ripperz are nailing trout right now. They’re deadly in “The Loop.” Gull Lake - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Rick and Joe spotted plenty of Cutties cruising around the waters of Gull. This lake is so chalk full of trout that you really need to be on it. Spin anglers trolling with lures at around 2 – 3 mph continue to do well on Gull. Just cruise up and down the lake where the drops occur. Hit off the breakwater also. Big fish are coming out of Gull… 4, 5, even 6 pounds. Fly anglers are whacking trout with streamers. The Mammoth High School Fly Fishing Association had plenty of fun there a week ago. Spin Anglers: Dough bait, Salmon Eggs, Inflated Nightcrawlers. All good options. Thomas Bouyants in red and gold are working wonders. Lip Ripper Spoonz in shad colors. Mirashads. Troll around with colors resembling brown and rainbow trout, as well as shads. June Lake - Fish Report Still fishing well. Want a guided spin trip in the Loop? Look up our June Lake spin and bait specialist Bob Carter. He knows where the big fish lurk, and he knows plenty of them. Spin Anglers: Lures are getting the biggest hits. Lip Ripperz. Broken-back Rapalas if you are targeting the bigger fish. Needlefish are also productive lures on June Lake. Per bait… Inflated nightcrawlers can be money in the bank. Rush Creek- Fish Report The spawners are dropping back into the lakes, but the hold-overs and full-time residents are yours to have right now. There are plenty of productive pockets all over Rush. Get at ‘em! Fly angling below Grant is good. Also… Sunday, June 22, the good folks of the Federation of Fly Fishers Southwest Council are working with the Silver Lake Resort for the Second-annual Rush Creek Clean-up. Everyone is invited to partake in this event. Call the shop for more details: 760-924-2181 The Mammoth High School Fly Fishing Association had plenty of fun there a week ago with the Glo-bugs. Fly Anglers: Red Rubber Worms, P.A. Perch, Hare’s Ears, BH Pheasant Tails. These are all great between the lakes. Below the lakes… P.A. Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Pheasant Tails. Spin Anglers: Salmon Eggs will work fine on a size 16 or 18 treble hook. Inflated Nightcrawlers. Any of the Gulp! products. Thomas Bouyants and Stingers for lures and jigs. Mammoth Lakes and Crowley Lake Fisheries (Southern Mono County) Great news, anglers… Mary and Mamie received 1,000 pounds of Alpers Trout in the 3 – 5 pound range, just yesterday. George is scheduled today for a healthy deposit of Alpers Trout, the day of this report. Twin continues to fish very well. The road is as open as the lakes above the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Get on up there for some impressive trout. Alpers Trout, that is!!! Crowley is also steadily improving. Upper and Lower Twin Lakes (Mammoth) - Fish Report Twin Lakes have been fishing well since opener. There are plenty of trout moving around and coming ashore. Fly Anglers: Full sink line with a green Woolly Bugger or Olive Matuka. For the dries, the trout on Twin like small black Elk Hair Caddis. There are some fun sections near the waterfall where the brooks reside. Spin Anglers: Float tubing with Lip Ripper Spoonz continues to work wonders. Otherwise, Inflated Nightcrawlers dipped in Garlic are working well. Lake Mary - "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Tim Alpers did some fine justice to this lake. Get up there. Fly Anglers: Full sink lines with big bugs on the end… Woolly Buggers, G’s-catchem-alls. Green or Brown or Black. Tie a Prince Nymph 18-inches off the back. Seek and destroy!!! Spin Anglers: Trout Traps and Lip Ripperz. Send those jigs to work. Nightcrawlers. Lake Mamie - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Mary ain’t the only lake in the loop with plenty of Alpers Trout just put into it. Mamie speaks as well. Fly Anglers: Buggers and sinking lines. Spin Anglers: Gulp! Eggs, Powerbait, Inflated Nightcrawlers… these trout will be hungry and moving when the ice is going… going… gone. Lake George - Fish Report Tim Alpers is scheduled to put his trout in this lake the day of this report. About 95% of the ice on this lake is ot the door till November/December 2008. Fly Anglers: Streamers and sink lines. Big trout on the other end, we’re talking about. Spin Anglers: Trout Traps and Lip Ripperz. They’ve worked well since opener. Inflated Nightcrawlers are also working. San Joaquin River - Fish Report Last day to ski/ snowboard is Monday, Memorial Day. After that, it’s a question of Caltrans clearing the road. Pray for sunshine. Sotcher Lake - Fish Report Stay tuned. Starkweather Lake - Fish Report Patience, our good friends. Mammoth Creek - Fish Report Still high will run-off, but spin anglers are still knocking them dead with bait. DFG keeps planting the daylights out of this very under-rated creek. No need to spend gas money to get to Mammoth Creek, just walk from the condo, take the town bus (free), or ride the bikes. Very family friendly. Fly Anglers: Water flows are high, so you’ll have to look for calmer pools and weigh down some Hare’s Ears or Pheasant Tails. Spin Anglers: Salmon Eggs or Nightcrawlers. Find slower waters and weight down the line really good. (Excuse us… really well.) Upper Owens River - Fish Report The Upper Owens River is open from the bridge to the lake (Brown’s Town Campground) this Saturday, May 24. There will be plenty of healthy trout getting nailed on this one. Water flows are fast and high: just get plenty of split shot on the line. Work the deeper pockets near the banks, as we’ve spotted (and hooked) plenty of trout in these pools. Fly Anglers: Time to do some exploring from the bridge on down to the lake. Plenty of new open water this weekend. Weight down your lines as you will want to slow the goods down and get them down in the deeper pockets. Prince Nymphs, Beadhead Prince Nymphs mind you, are quality options. Tie on a bright Glo-Bug below it. You can definitely go with heavier tippet as the trout will not really keen into its presence with the murkier water flows. Other options for nymphs are P.A. Rubber Worms. They are bright and easily seen. Flossy Nymphs. Black PT’s (just drop something big and bright with them). Also… dead drift two Matukas. Trout love these things. They’ll spot one and grab the other. Surface action? You’ll hear slurping. Caddis and Baetis Patterns are good choices if you work a zone where you know they are rising. Don’t drift them blind in the run-off conditions. Yellow Sallys? Oh, Sally… we are getting close, baby. Spin Anglers: Plenty of quality bows are coming ashore. The bait seems to be the ticket. Lots of new water is opening up this weekend and anglers will take them with Gulp! Eggs, Gulp! dough, Inflated Nightcrawlers. Brilliant and bright colored Thomas Bouyants (like red with gold) and Panther-Martins could also hook trout. Crowley Lake - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Angling on Crowley Lake is steadily improving. It was a slow start this season, but anglers continue to funnel into our fun shop with better and better stories of the angling on Crowley. Spin anglers are doing well trolling and fly anglers are midging plenty of trout. McGee, Hilton, Crooked, Stormy Flats, Perch Flats… all doing well. Plenty of perch are also now being caught. “Crowley Chicken” at its best. Want a trip? Call Matuka Joe. He’ll take you out. 760-924-2181 Fly Anglers: Try midging in 4 - 12 feet of water. Any of the above-mentioned spots. Look for warmer water. Go with our deadly midge patterns in grey, red, or black.. BIG BUGS in 16 and larger. Larger sizes like 14 and 16 better resemble the natural sizes in the waters right now. Continue to go big. Tippet? 4X, even 3X. They are still not leader shy. Get those midges about 1 – 3 feet off the bottom in… “The Zone.” Streamers? You could kick around with black or olive Buggers on a sink line and very likely hook trout. Try Crooked, Whiskey, or Hilton. Spin Anglers: Getting better. We are hearing positive reports of Tasmanian Devils in brown trout or spotted dog, being trolled in 5 colors, with 70 – 100 feet of monofil on top of it. Your Rapalas and Thomas Bouyants will also do well. Convict Lake - Fish Report Convict continues to fish consistently. It is good and steady. Bait anglers are doing very well with Gulp! worms. Lots of family fun up at Convict right now. Fly Anglers: Toss some streamers into the lake at the far end where the waters flow into it. The currents will carry your Woolly Buggers out far enough to where you can start to strip them back in again. Green is our color of choice on Convict, though Brown and Black should work just as well. Spin Anglers: Gulp! worms and Inflated Nightcrawlers are really what are deadly at this moment. The bait action is very good at Convict. Trollers slowly working around the lake with Thomas Bouyants in red or red with gold are also hooking trout. There are plenty of very big, fat fish in this lake. Go get ‘em. Convict Creek - Fish Report Flows have increased here a bit, but still very fishable. Look for pockets with calmer waters or weigh down your line. Fly Anglers: Nymph patterns seem to do best here. Go indicator-less with PT's and Hare's Ear's. That's really all there is to it. Spin Anglers: Go Gulp ‘em! Then get the rest with Salmon eggs. Hot Creek Fish Report Flows have picked up big time at Hot Creek, but the angling is still very good, particularly down in the canyon. The water is murky, and while it doesn’t look pretty, it is fishing well right now. Why? The trout are under the impression that the increased water flows offer better hiding for them. While it might better keep the bears and raccoons away, it doesn’t keep the anglers away. The cold weather might force more anglers into the condo (more room on the creek for you) but the deeper pools and pockets pull out some of the larger trout. Now is big fish season on Hot Creek. Just weigh down your bugs and dredge the pools where the pigs, hogs (and trout) lie. Work them with Scuds and PT’s, and worm patterns. Dry action? You’ll see them, particularly at the Interpretive Site. Cinnamon ants are working fine. Parachute Adams and Elk Hair Caddis also. When it warms up again, bust out the Hopper Patterns. Fly Anglers: Plenty of weight… that’s really all that has changed from now and the last written report. That, and try a Scud or worm pattern as your first or second choice of flies. Baetis and Midge Patterns, also. They’ve been working and it ain’t broken yet. Continue to go small in sizes 18 and 20. Tiny BH Pheasant Tails are also working in The Interpretive Site. Dries? We’re coming up soon on Yellow Sally Season. Yellow Sallys are lots of fun. Big trout key in on them. Dries for now… Ants, BWO’s, Parachute Adams, RS2 Emergers in Olive, Brown, and Grey. Keep the idea of Dave’s Hoppers in the back of your mind. Rock Creek Lake - Fish Report Rock Creek Lake Resort is open up. Pie as good as Virginia Lakes Resort up here, and plenty of trout to get at also. Stocked with DFG fish. You can easily get up to Mosquito Flats above the lake, and the mosquitoes aren’t quite out in full force yet. For the lake… Inflated Nightcrawlers dipped in Trout Garlic. Gulp! in Sherbert and American Pie! Trolling with Thomas Bouyants is also working well. The creek, where waters are calmer, is also a lot of fun right now. Fly Anglers: Streamers are your best bets. Woolly Buggers with a full sink line in Green or Black. Spin Anglers: As mentioned, worms are working as is Gulp! Dough Bait. Trolling with a lead core line with Thomas Bouyants is producing results. Go with the rainbow trout color. Or red, or red with gold. Alll of these are fine. Rock Creek - Fish Report DFG continues to stock the campgrounds. Water flows are relatively high, so you’ll want to fish near the campgrounds in the meadow areas where the creek flows flatter and smoother. Fly Anglers: Traditional nymphs (Hare’s Ears, Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs)… all good. Go with tiny size 20 PT's in black or green. San Juan Worms in tan should also work. Parachute Adams and Elk Hair Caddis on the surface, along with Callibaetis Cripples. Brooks Sprouts should also work. Size 6X tippet is likely the tippet of choice for the dries. P.A. Rubber Worm should also hook trout subsurface. You don't need an indicator at Rock Creek if using a P.A. Worm, since you will see it... or... double up and use the P.A. Rubber Worm as the indicator. Spin Anglers: Salmon Eggs and Inflated Nightcrawlers for bait. Stingers and Trout Teasers for lures. Lower Owens, Pleasant Valley, and Bishop Creek Fisheries (Inyo County) Water flows are still threw the roof for the Lower Owens River. Don’t bother till they calm down the flows. Contrary to high flows… the water levels at Sabrina, North Lake, and South Lake are quite low. Not very pleasant to look at, but there are trout in the waters. The best bet angling near our Southerly neighbors? Bishop Creek. The areas of the creek around the campgrounds are calm and there are plenty of wild browns in there. Fun to hook with a 3-weight rod and reel set up. Intake Two is always worth the effort. Pleasant Valley Reservoir is fishing well. When water flows calm down, Pine Creek is definitely worth exploring also. Lower Owens River Still flowing at around 600cfs. Don’t bother. Definitely going to get better much in time for the Millpond Music Festival. We’ll keep you posted as conditions improve. Fly Anglers: Wait for flows to drop. Spin Anglers: Shut down pretty good by Line Street and Warm Springs. Not fishing well at all. Pleasant Valley Reservoir - Fish Report Fishing at PVR is good right now. There is a steady flow of healthy trout coming out on stringers. Lots of fun and plenty of places to toss the rig. Get at ‘em with some nightcrawlers. Fly Anglers: Go deep with a full sink line and Woolly Buggers in green or brown. This is your best option right now. Spin Anglers: Powerbait in Orange or Lemon Twist. Nightcrawlers dipped in Trout Dip. Berkley Powerbait. Lures: Thomas Bouyants and Rapalas 110% as they are coming on strong down there. Intake Two - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Intake Two will be a very pleasant place to be this weekend. You won’t be the only angler there, but you will find yourself with all the others hooking and beaching trout. Drive the float tube up to Intake Two and kick around for a while. After working the still water, continue further up the road to get at some of the meandering bends of Bishop Creek. Fly Anglers: Put the air in the tube and kick around with a BH Olive Matuka or BH Green Woolly Bugger, both sizes 10 or 12. Full sink or sinking tip lines. The creek above the stillwater... small Elk Hair patterns and tiny PT's. Spin Anglers: Lip Ripperz and Thomas Bouyants. Just kick around and get ready for the strike. Put some worm on the end of each hook. Bishop Creek - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Continues to fish well at the South Fork of Bishop Creek. Look for the clearer, slower waters where they meander through the meadows and campground areas. Water temps are cold, so wear your layers under your waders. There are some fast flowing waters in certain sections, but up by Table Mountain you’ll do just fine. It’s loaded with wild browns and stocked bows. Fly Anglers: Parachute Adams and Elk Hair Caddis for your surface flies. Subsurface... smaller-sized PT's and Hare's Ears. Soft Tackle flies will also land trout. Spin Anglers: Go with the Inflated Nightcrawlers to get at the browns. North Lake - Fish Report Water levels are low. You’re hooked.
Spin anglers: Mackerel and sardines. Hook them through the nose and let them swim around until them become your lunch’s lunch.
Angling on Mono Lake??? Are we serious??? Call us at the shop and we’ll let you know what we really know… 760-924-2181

East Walker River- Fish Report
Water flows on the East Walker River have picked up again, but the flows are starting to run constantly, so the angling is turning on again after a quick recess.

Tioga & June Lake Loop Area Fisheries (Middle Mono County)
We’ve got good news anglers… The Tioga Pass (Highway 120) is open on the Eastern Side of Yosemite National Park. Trust us. Per The June Lake Loop… - Fish Report
Water flows have picked up, so just weight down your goods and work the deeper pockets.

Lee Vining Creek - Fish Report
Flows in Lee Vining Creek are fast, but the bait anglers are still doing well with the Nightcrawlers.

Grant Lake - Fish Report
Water levels are certainly low, but this fine fishery is stacked with trout.

Silver Lake - "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!"
Silver is still fishing very, very well.
Fly Anglers: We are suggesting this method of fly angling for all of the lake in the Loop.
Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers. Gulp. Either of these options on a 2 – 3lb. test should dial in trout. Cast from the boat launch area. Lures… Go with some Lip Ripperz. Lip Ripperz are nailing trout right now. They’re deadly in “The Loop.”

Gull Lake - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!"
Rick and Joe spotted plenty of Cutties cruising around the waters of Gull.
Fly Anglers: Needlefish are also productive lures on June Lake. Per bait… Inflated nightcrawlers can be money in the bank.

Rush Creek- Fish Report
The spawners are dropping back into the lakes, but the hold-overs and full-time residents are yours to have right now. There are plenty of productive pockets all over Rush. Get at ‘em!

Convict Lake - Fish Report
Convict continues to fish consistently.
Go get ‘em.

Convict Creek - Fish Report
Flows have increased here a bit, but still very fishable.

Hot Creek Fish Report
Flows have picked up big time at Hot Creek, but the angling is still very good, particularly down in the canyon.

Rock Creek Lake - Fish Report
Rock Creek Lake Resort is open up.

Rock Creek - Fish Report
DFG continues to stock the campgrounds.

Lower Owens, Pleasant Valley, and Bishop Creek Fisheries (Inyo County)
Water flows are still threw the roof for the Lower Owens River.
Spin Anglers: Shut down pretty good by Line Street and Warm Springs. Not fishing well at all.

Pleasant Valley Reservoir - Fish Report
Fishing at PVR is good right now. There is a steady flow of healthy trout coming out on stringers. Lots of fun and plenty of places to toss the rig. Get at ‘em with some nightcrawlers.
Fly Anglers: Go deep with a full sink line and Woolly Buggers in green or brown. You won’t be the only angler there, but you will find yourself with all the others hooking and beaching trout. Drive the float tube up to Intake Two and kick around for a while. After working the still water, continue further up the road to get at some of the meandering bends of Bishop Creek.
Fly Anglers: Lip Ripperz and Thomas Bouyants. Just kick around and get ready for the strike. Put some worm on the end of each hook.
Bishop Creek - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!"
Continues to fish well at the South Fork of Bishop Creek.
Anglers young and younger… what’s the word in the Eastern Sierra for the first half of the month of May? Life is good. Angling in the multiple Mono and Inyo County waters continues to produce trout big and bigger. And, the weather continues to warm up a bit more each day to give us all a small taste of some TLC: Trout Largely Caught. We are looking at a warming trend hitting us, beginning this weekend continuing throughout all of next week. Winter is truly behind us now. That’s great news, hitting us two-fold: 1. The warmer weather will start moving more and more fish around; and, 2. It will be more and more comfortable for anglers to toss the spin or fly rod wearing a tee-shirt. Time to start working on the tan. You can toss the neoprene gloves in the closet for the season and ask the spouse where the sun gloves are. Very promising news for the angler, maybe not so good news for the target trout that we are all after. No worries, though. There exists no shortage of trout in this part of the Northern Hemisphere. Mammoth Lakes is thee trout capital of Southern California. Got a few minutes to kill at work with a cup of java in hand? There has been some great lake fishing going on up here at Bridgeport Reservoir, Convict Lake, June Lake, and Silver Lake. Crowley is still “hit or miss” angling, but it’s not like staring at the partially snow-capped mountains from the boat is really all that tough. It isn’t. For the moving waters, there is a lot of great angling action right now! Hot Creek continues to earn its title as one of the top-100 blue ribbon fisheries in the U.S. of A. The Upper Owens has some great fishing on it. Both of these trophy trout fisheries have been turned on all winter, and the angling is only getting better. There are plenty of places around here to catch and release some big ol’ spawning fish. If you go after them, just be sure that you know what you’re doing in regard to returning them back into the waters unharmed. In regard to keeping our fisheries healthy, DFG and Tim Alpers have been stocking a lot of the waters around here, and there have been numerous reports of impressive takes. A 6 ½ pounder was just taken from Virginia Lakes; a 9 pounder came ashore from Twin Lakes in Bridgeport; plenty of 3 – 4 pounders are coming out of Twin Lakes in Mammoth; June and Silver Lakes are also producing numerous trout in the 3 – 4 pound range. The hold-overs are hungry. You, too? Go get ‘em!!! Need a place to stay in Mammoth? Stay in Mammoth at: www.stayinmammoth.com If we cannot answer your questions in this report, contact Matuka Joe online at matukajoe@yahoo.com Bridgeport & Virginia Lakes Area Fisheries (Northern Mono County) Bridgeport Reservoir - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Bridgeport Reservoir is fishing pretty good right now. The fish are scattered much like Crowley but we are hearing about more takes in Bridgeport Reservoir than we are in Crowley. The fish are largely being located and taken from the shallows, in 3 – 8 feet of H2O. Trolling with lures has been the most successful means of catch for the spin anglers while stillwater nymphing is the way to go for fly anglers. Weather has been an all-or-none on the Reservoir, with either really nice days or windstorms stronger than the Great Plains dustbowls that the Okies found in the 1930’s, but the weather is taking a more constant turn for the better. Along the lines of angling… The East Walker River is fishing well again. You can do alright to spend the day in Bridgeport. The only Grapes of Wrath that you’ll find in Northern Mono County is a glass of red. If you pull any healthy browns out of the Reservoir (and there are plenty), you can thank Eric and Michelle of the Bridgeport Fisheries Enhancement Program. Fly Anglers: Stillwater nymphing is the way to go right now. There are plenty of blood-red midges in the Reservoir so this is our most sincere recommendation of color of choice. Any red midges (our P.A. Midge Pattern is awesome!), San Juan Worms, Flossies, or Copper Tigers… any of these in sizes 14 – 18 should hook trout. Be sure to correctly gauge your strike indicator so the midges are hovering 8 – 24 inches off the bottom. Play around a bit with the depth, to fine-tune the strike zone to where the trout are for the day. Nymph the shallow waters, where the depth is anywhere from 3 – 8 feet. Per the streamer action… you can experiment with G’s-catchem-alls, or Woolly Buggers. Go with green or black, and a full sink or intermediate tip line. Spin Anglers: Lures are definitely finding the most fish right now. Trolling with a variety of Spoonerz and Panther Martins is working well. Trolling with worms on the end of a lure is also working well. On warmer weather days, the bait fishing can be good. Gulp ‘em! in Captain America or Sherbert. Inflated nightcrawlers are also good choices. Upper and Lower Twin Lakes (Bridgeport) - Fishing is steady on Twin Lakes in Bridgeport. There are some big bows that are starting to get hooked. One nine-pound rainbow came ashore from Twin Lakes this week. It is no secret that some of the biggest trout in the Eastern Sierra reside in these lakes, and we are starting to see more and more of them. Twin Lakes Resort “A Jewel in the Sierra” is exactly that, “A Jewel in the Sierra.” The resort will gladly rent you a boat for a day. Hook into one of them bigger trout, and you can cut the motor for a tow around the lake. Fly Anglers: Kick around with a full sink line and Woolly Bugger or Krystal Flash Bugger. Tie on a size-14 Prince Nymph as your second fly hanging off the back. You can also tie on a Pheasant Tail or Prince Nymph. Any of them about 18-inches off your streamer. Spin Anglers: Inflated nightcrawlers dipped in Trout Garlic Dip is killing it!!! Powerbait is also very successful on Twin Lakes right now. Like Bridgeport Reservoir, the bait action is best on warmer days. For the lures…Broken-back Rapalas are hooking the larger trout. Big trout dial onto these and go after them, only to find that the joke’s on them. Thomas Bouyants and Jakes are also working well. Virginia Lakes - Fish Report The ice is thinning on the lakes, though word on the street has it that Big Virginia still has enough ice to walk on. Do gauge it day by day as falling through the ice can be a quick ticket from this life into the next one. Little Virginia is best avoided completely right now, as there is still ice on it, but definitely not enough to support you. It will clear up shortly. Trumbull is fishable. A 6 ½ pounder was taken from Trumbull on a Trout Teaser. The creeks are pretty full with run-off up there, and still difficult to access, so, let’s wait a bit for the moving waters. Virginia Lakes Resort is set to open the weekend of May 17 and 18. Get that fork ready, as there is some great pie to get into up there. And, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap. Sounds like a good breakfast. Fly anglers: Nothing to report yet. Stay tuned. Spin anglers: Lip Ripperz and Trout Teasers dropped below the ice. It’s been working well, and if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. Otherwise, some reports of trout taken on nightcrawlers are true to the word. Lundy Lake - Fish Report The waters are open and the angling is good. Trolling with flashy colored lures has been working well. More so with some nightcrawler on the end of each hook. Fly anglers: We haven’t heard much still of the fly angling on Lundy. The reports that we are getting are from our spin angling comrades. However, this is not to say that a full sink line with a BH Olive Matuka or Woolly Bugger is not a good idea… it is. Work the shallower waters, as this is where the trout are until it warms up further. Call us at the shop for the latest on Lundy: 760-924-2181 Spin anglers: Trolling with bright and flashy lures are working well. Thomas Bouyants in Gold and Red. Silver and Red TB’s are also beaching trout. Inflated Nightcrawlers and Powerbait are great at Lundy. Mono Lake - Fish Report We received an e-mail last week asking us, “Is it really true about tuna in the big mono lake??” Folks, we were slightly off about the tuna report on Mono Lake. But… THE HALIBUT AND SEA BASS RUNS AT MONO LAKE RIGHT NOW ARE INCREDIBLE!!! Fly anglers: Clousers. Full sink line. Make sure to clean the salt from your rod and reel when done for the day. You will want a set-up around the 7 – 9 weight range, with about 300 yards of backing on your reel… just in case. Spin anglers: Any live bait. Otherwise go with some White and Rootbeer Scampi’s or any other jigs or lures that you can come across. Angling on Mono Lake? Call us at the shop and we’ll let you know what we really know… 760-924-2181 East Walker River- Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Fishing on The East Walker River is really improving, quickly. Water flows are holding at around a steady 100cfs and the temperatures are increasing, putting more trout on the move. On warmer days, you’ll start to see the caddis come out. We are not in a full-blown dry fly explosion yet, but the first few signs are coming alive. With the brilliant red midges in The Bridgeport Reservoir, red is also a productive color for nymphing on The East Walker River right now. We are going with streamers in the evening and nymphs (or dries, if evident) during the day. Weight up your line enough to get that good East Walker drift going on. The “Miracle Mile” is full of miracles right now… large and larger. Fly Anglers: P.A. Midges in Red with Silver Ribbon are good choices. So are Flossie Nymphs, Copper Tigers, and San Juan Worm. Any of these in sizes 14 – 18. P.A. Rubber Worms in Red will also bang trout. Prince Nymphs in sizes 14, 16, and 18 make wonderful first flies, then drop one of the above mentioned flies off the PN about 18 inches. Dries? If you spot a caddis in the warmer weather days, and see the slurp, see if they’ll take. Odds are better than not that they will. Elk Hair Caddis in sizes 16 or 18. Work the drifts and currents as well as the pools. Streamers in the evening? G’s-catchem-alls and BH Flash Buggers in Black or Green. Intermediate tip line is your best bet. Jig the streamers across the current and strip them in again. Make the trout mad. Get them to bite. Spin Anglers: As stated on our spin and bait fishing video report, go with barbless lures. Rapalas, Pin Minnows (made in Japan, and made well), and Thomas Bouyants are awesome on The East Walker River. You may take one trout over 18-inches from the Walker. Have at it, as these regs exist to help regulate Mother Nature. Tioga & June Lake Loop Area Fisheries (Middle Mono County) Saddleback Lake - Fish Report The Tioga Pass is still closed. Stay tuned. Call the shop for an update: 760-924-2181 Tioga Creek - Fish Report Ditto per Saddleback Lake and Lee Vining Creek. Lee Vining Creek - Fish Report Same as mentioned above. Grant Lake - Fish Report There are plenty of trout funneling into Rush Creek. Lots of healthy bows in the 12 – 14 inch range. Work this side of the lake, or fish where the creek and the lake meet. Fly Anglers: Glo-Bugs in Peach, Red, or Orange are working well at the creek where it flows into the lake. Farther out, go with streamers… BH Olive Matuka or Woolly Bugger. Toss them out and strip them in again. Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers dipped in Trout Dip. Berkley Gulp or Gulp Eggs. Powerbait in Garlic. These are all good selections. Lures: Thomas Bouyants, Rapalas, Lip Ripperz, Pin Minnows, Kastmasters, Needlefish... just take your entire arsenal and see what they are grabbing at. Silver Lake - "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" The Silver Lake Resort is a place for nightcrawlers, Olive Beadhead Matukas, and a very enjoyable time… and… the angling on Silver has turned on big right now!!! The fishing is very good on Silver, and along with June Lake, they are our “PA Picks of the Week!” for “The Loop.” Floattubers on the fly or lure, and spin anglers with nightcrawlers are going well. Also, make note in your calendars that Sunday, June 22, the good folks of the Federation of Fly Fishers Southwest Council are working with the Silver Lake Resort for the Second-annual Rush Creek Clean-up. Everyone is invited to partake in this event. Call the shop for more details: 760-924-2181 Fly Anglers: Full sink line. Beadhead Olive Matuka. Kick around and enjoy the ride. Work around the shore near the boat launch. Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers. Gulp. Either of these options on a 2 – 3lb. test should dial in trout. Cast from the boat launch area. Lures… Go with some Lip Ripperz. Lip Ripperz are nailing trout right now. They’re deadly in “The Loop.” Gull Lake - Fish Report Gull is arguably one of the most beautiful lake settings in the Eastern Sierra. Surrounded by aspen trees, and found just below the June Mountain Resort, it is a small taste of paradise. It is chalk full of some of the biggest trout in the Loop, stocked very regularly. Definitely a good place to spend the day. Fly Anglers: Float tube. Intermediate or Full Sink Line. Green BH Woolly Bugger or BH Olive Matuka in sizes 10 or 12. You can also get some decent dry action in the evening. Go with Elk Hair’s in Tan or Brown. Either of these strategies glorify anglers near the “pitch and putt” miniature golf piers just off the side of the boat launch ramp. Spin Anglers: Go Gulp ‘Em! Gulp dough is going to hook up trout on these lakes. Sherbert or American Pie. Also… Inflated nightcrawlers dipped in garlic. Lures… Lip Ripperz, Pin Minnows, Broken-back Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants… it’s all good. June Lake - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" PA Guide Bob Carter has nothing but great news to constantly bring into the shop about June Lake. Angling on June Lake is very, very good right now. Trolling with lures is hot, and the bait fishing is definitely picking up. Fly Anglers: Floating tubing with Woolly Buggers on a full sink or intermediate tip line is working well. Color choices to go with are green, brown, and black. Olive Matukas are also producing strikes. Spin Anglers: Lures are getting the biggest hits. Lip Ripperz. Broken-back Rapalas if you are targeting the bigger fish. Needlefish are also productive lures on June Lake. Per bait… Inflated nightcrawlers can be money in the bank. Rush Creek- Fish Report Your best bet right now is the stretch that works its way into Grant. There are plenty of beautiful rainbows channeling up it. Around the 12 – 14 inch range. Healthy trout. Also… Sunday, June 22, the good folks of the Federation of Fly Fishers Southwest Council are working with the Silver Lake Resort for the Second-annual Rush Creek Clean-up. Everyone is invited to partake in this event. Call the shop for more details: 760-924-2181 Fly Anglers: Drifting Glo-bugs in orange, peach, and red are dialing on trout. Small split shot. Indicator not too far up the line. Work the currents as well as behind rocks and under logs. There are plenty of trout in there for you to get at. Spin Anglers: Salmon Eggs will work fine on a size 16 or 18 treble hook. Inflated Nightcrawlers. Any of the Gulp! products. Thomas Bouyants and Stingers for lures and jigs. Mammoth Lakes and Crowley Lake Fisheries (Southern Mono County) Upper and Lower Twin Lakes (Mammoth) - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Still the best lake to fish in the basin. Ice free since before opener, and fishing well. Float tubers continue to do well at Twin. All about the Lip Ripper Spoonz. Plenty of sizeable DFG hold-overs and Alpers Trout coming ashore. Top that off with dinner at The Lakefront Restaurant? That sounds tempting. Keep at it. Lake Mary - Mary is still iced, but you need to keep a very close eye on how much ice there is. The weather keeps warming and angling buddies need to be pulling trout out of the waters, not friends who broke through the ice. Use common sense on Mary right now. In about a week or ten days, it should be ice-free. Fly Anglers: Patience. Spin Anglers: Trout Traps and Lip Ripperz. Send those jigs to work. Again, know how much ice is under you, before you go over it. Lake Mamie - Fish Report Only partially iced. Fairly dangerous to walk across. Give it a few days to turn to blue waters. Give us a call at the shop for the latest update: 760-924-2181 Fly Anglers: Patience. Spin Anglers: Hit Twin. Read the report above. Lake George - Fish Report George currently has the thickest coverage off any of the lakes. But, again, be very cautious. Fly Anglers: Patience. Spin Anglers: Trout Traps and Lip Ripperz. They’ve worked well since opener. Again, just be aware of how much ice is under you. San Joaquin River - Fish Report The road is still covered with snow and casting around turning chair lifts could get a bit dicey. If you hook a chair on Chair #11, it’s going to take you for a ride. Sotcher Lake - Fish Report Ditto per San Joaquin River. If you are into tubing, the only tubing you’ll find yourself doing is sliding on the snow tubes. And, snow conditions are a little on the sticky side as early as 10am. Lifts are currently open from 7:30am – 3pm, if you itch to ski or snowboard. Starkweather Lake - Fish Report Stark covered with snow still… for all we know… as it is inaccessible. Mammoth Creek - Fish Report Waters are murky with run off up towards Twin Lakes but fishable in town. Not a lot of fish in it yet, but there definitely are some in it, if you want a place to fish that is not too far away. Fly Anglers: Drift PT's and Hare's Ears. Also… try tossing some Parachute Adams and Caddis Elk Hair at them. Spin Anglers: Salmon Eggs on a treble hook or Gulp! should take care of you fine. Upper Owens River - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Plenty of trout being caught on lures and bait from the Monument to the Lake. From the Benton Bridge Crossing on up, fly anglers have been doing exceedingly well for as long as we can remember. Fly Anglers: Not much has changed. For the stretch from the bridge on up... Surface action on the Upper Owens River is still great. Warmer weathers equate to more hatches. Go with Midge, Baetis (Mayfly), and Caddis Patterns. Caddis Elk Hair in Brown or Tan are wonderful. Size 18. Parachute Adams, good choice. Parachute Midges and Griffith Gnats are also great flies for the Upper Owens River right now. Fore-n-aft and Midge Cluster Patterns are productive surface flies. Surface action on the Upper Owens River is very good right now. Angling access improves as the snow continues to melt and there are plenty of foot paths to follow out there. Subsurface flies that we recommended in the last report are still killing it on the Upper Owens River. We speak of Black PT nymphs in sizes 16 and 18, P.A. Rubber Worms, Flossies, size 14, Glo-Bugs, Caddis Pupa Patterns. Any of these are fine selections. Streamers? G's-catchem-all's and BH Olive Matukas are great flies. From the monument to the lake... drift some nymph patterns... P.A. Rubber Worms, Glo-bugs, PT's, any of these shall work fine. Spin Anglers: Thomas Bouyants from the monument to the lake. Inflated nightcrawlers dipped in garlic. You will definitely catch fish with either of these options. Spot fish the suckers (trout, that is, though you can catch suckers in here), and it is a lot of fun!!! Crowley Lake - Fish Report Crowley is really still “hit or miss” angling right now. Every angler in the Sierra is still trying to unlock that certain honey hole. What we do know… Sandy Point, Layton Springs, and McGee Bay are producing trout. With the warm weather coming our way this week, Crowley is only going to get better and better. Matuka Joe is spending a lot of time on Crowley Lake right now, unlocking more and more honey holes. Want a trip? Call us up: 760-924-2181 Fly Anglers: Get the float tube out and kick around with the full or intermediate tip sink line with PA Perch Patterns, Woolly Buggers, Matukas, or G’s-catchem-alls. Try Hilton, McGee, Sandy, or Layton. Spin Anglers: Pin Minnows, Lip Ripper Spoonz, Needlefish… these lures are viable choices right now. Rapalas are also great to troll with. Go with a lead core line. Bait? Worms. Inflated nightcrawlers dipped in garlic. Convict Lake - Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" Convict, barring the winds, is fishing very good right now. Tim Alpers just dropped 800 pounds of trout into the lake and DFG stocked the creek. If you do fish the creek, feel free to do a good deed and take someone else’s trash away from it with you. This poor creek looks a lot like the landfill outside of town. Please respect all waters that you fish. Leave them better than you found them. It’s okay to take back more than trout from this creek. Leave it better than you found it. Per what to go with… nothing is broken… so keep at it with our advice… Fly Anglers: Toss some streamers into the lake at the far end where the waters flow into it. The currents will carry your Woolly Buggers out far enough to where you can start to strip them back in again. Green is our color of choice on Convict, though Brown and Black should work just as well. Spin Anglers: Inflated Nightcrawlers are awesome on Convict. Pitch them from the beach area. Kastmasters are also great from the shore. From the pontoon (or other boats), Thomas Bouyants are good lures. Put some nightcrawler pieces on the actual hooks to really get medieval on them trout. Convict Creek - Fish Report DFG put some trout into this creek. Have at it. This fishery is easy to manipulate around (though the trees have eaten many flies on this creek), and it is a lot of fun. Bait fishing with worms is working well. User-friendly as far as fly fishing without an indicator. Fly Anglers: Nymph patterns seem to do best here. Go indicator-less with PT's and Hare's Ear's. That's really all there is to it. Spin Anglers: Go Gulp ‘em! Then get the rest with Salmon eggs. Hot Creek Fish Report "Performance Anglers Pick of the Week!" HC is still turned on big time. This is a great time of year to fish Hot Creek, since July and August can turn into warfare angling on Hot Creek, as far as trying to find your spot. The Interpretive Site continues to produce trout over 4lbs. The canyon is equally as enjoyable. The hatches are bigger and better each day. Many will argue that HC is technically difficult to fish, and it can be, but like anything else in life, the more time you invest into it, the more you get out of it. Hence… get out there!!! Trout Fly Anglers: Not much has changed. Still the same as far as suggestions… On the surface, the slurping is happening though most of the really good hook ups are happening much closer to the bottom than the surface. You could pitch a baetis or midge dry pattern to a feeding trout that you happen to spot in action, but your best bet is definitely going to come from a subsurface fly. What's working? Tie on a tiny black Midge or WD-40 pattern. Sizes 20 and 22 seem to be getting the most grabs. Other good bugs to drift below the surface are Brassie BH Poxy Backs in Black or Charteuse (sizes 16 - 20), Caddis Pupa Emergers in Sparkle, Olive (sizes 16 - 18), Baetis GB Poxy Backs in Light Olive (sizes 20 - 22). Disco Midges in sizes 20 or 22. Black Beauty GB's in the same size. Threadbody Baetis in sizes 20 - 24. The infamous San Juan Worm in Tan? Yep, it works. You'll want any of these bugs bouncing just off the bottom to run past the eyes of the fish. What's that mean? Small split shot to weigh it down without getting it caught in the reeds (size 6 shot), placed about 8 - 10 inches from the fly on size 6X tippet... that's your best bet. Fish the subsurface flies with a big ol' Royal Wulff as your indicator and definitely do the math with your tippet to get those flies as close to the trout as possible. You'll definitely see the fish in Hot Creek, simply correctly gauge the length of tippet from dry fly indicator to subsurface nymph. As a rule of general thumb, this roughly means about 18 - 24 inches for the shallower runs with up to 4 feet of distance for the deeper pools. You'll spend some time tying different knots on Hot Creek, as patience is a virtue. However... that is though the entire point. Be patient, and that four pound trout will come. Rock Creek Lake - Fish Report Ice is still there, but be aware of how much and where. Anglers dropping jigs threw the ice have done well. Just keep your eye on how much frozen H2O there is to support you. Fly Anglers: Nothing yet. Stay tuned for the final thawing. It’s going to be streamer-heaven when it opens up. Spin Anglers: Mini-jigs below the ice… Trout Teasers… Lip Ripperz… Jakes… all good. Rock Creek - Fish Report Still high run-off up high. In the lower campgrounds and east of the 395, there is some decent angling right now. Fly Anglers: Go with tiny size 20 PT's in black or green. Why limited yourself to one fly, when you can use two? Spin Anglers: Salmon Eggs and Inflated Nightcrawlers for bait. Stingers and Trout Teasers for lures. Lower Owens, Pleasant Valley, and Bishop Creek Fisheries (Inyo County) Lower Owens River At the time of this report, flows are over 600cfs. In the immediate future, angling ain’t gonna happen. Check our website for the water flows, and if they drop for a couple of days, it could become fishable again. The good news? A rainbow weighing probably over 9 pounds and measuring an arm’s length was caught and released in the Wild Trout Section last week. The angler is not releasing photos to keep the hole “a secret.” Hence, it is your job to get there again when flows calm down and fish it. Just fish it!!! Fly Anglers: Wait for flows to drop. Spin Anglers: Just hit Pleasant Valley Reservoir or the lower section of Bishop Creek. Pleasant Valley Reservoir - Fish Report Still as good as it was for the Blake Jones Trout Derby. If you need warm weather, you’ll find plenty down on the PVR. Intake Two - Fish Report Lots and lots of trout are taken from this fishery and lots and lots more are still in it. Very float tube friendly. Bishop Creek - Fish Report Run-off higher up has murked the waters. Fishing the lower sections however can beach plenty of DFG and Alpers trout. Fly Anglers: Parachute Adams and Elk Hair Caddis for your surface flies. Subsurface... smaller-sized PT's and Hare's Ears. Soft Tackle flies will also land trout. Spin Anglers: Powerbait, Powerbait, Powerbait. Plenty of 4+ pound Alpers in this creek that will readily consume Powerbait. Gulp! as well as the traditional Powerbait will work fine. Nightcrawlers will also land trout. North Lake - Fish Report Stay tuned for the report. We’re getting closer each and every day. South Lake - Fish Report Stay tuned for the report.
